About Janus Lodge

Our unique history and character, shaped by over a century of brotherhood in Essex.

Founded in 1922 in the aftermath of the Great War, Janus Lodge was established by men who understood that brotherhood, moral guidance, and mutual support were essential for rebuilding both communities and lives.

Named after the Roman god of transitions and new beginnings, our Lodge embraces the balance between honouring tradition and welcoming progress. This spirit runs through everything we do – from our ceremonies and charitable work to the time we spend together socially throughout the year.

We are also proud to be the only teetotal Lodge remaining in Essex – a unique tradition that honours our founding principles. That said, while no alcohol is served during Lodge meetings or formal dinners, our members do still enjoy a drink and good conversation outside the Lodge just as much as anyone else. It is part of what makes Janus distinctive: rooted in tradition, welcoming in spirit, and always good company.

Our Charitable Work

Making a real difference in Essex through support for both Masonic and non-Masonic causes.

Charity has always been central to the life of Janus Lodge. Every year, we raise funds for a range of good causes, combining Lodge collections with generous personal contributions from our members. While we support Masonic charities nationally, our priority is helping non-Masonic organisations that make a meaningful impact here in Essex.

Over the years, we have been proud to support charities that provide vital services – from comforting children in hospital to assisting families through hardship and backing essential community work.

You can explore some of the charities we support in the section alongside this text, where you will find links to learn more about the amazing work they do.

Being part of Janus Lodge means continuing a long tradition of generosity – and joining others who believe that brotherhood is about more than meetings; it is about making a difference.

Our Meetings

Quarterly Lodge nights with real purpose, good conversation, and great food.

Janus Lodge meets four times a year, on the fourth Saturday of January, third Saturday of March, third Saturday of July, and fourth Saturday of October. Our meetings strike a good balance – with meaningful ceremony, Lodge business, and time to catch up over a relaxed dinner.

Beyond our regular meetings, Lodge life includes a variety of social events throughout the year – from our annual garden party to regular golf days, theatre trips, curry nights, and even the odd fishing trip. It is all part of the camaraderie that makes Janus such a close-knit and welcoming Lodge.

Each meeting begins with a short opening ceremony, followed by either a degree or Lodge business. Afterwards, we enjoy a sit-down meal – known as the Festive Board – which offers a more informal space to share stories, good food, and genuine friendship.

Visitors are always welcome, and visiting Masons are a valued part of our meetings – we enjoy welcoming Brethren from across the Province and beyond. If you are a Freemason and would like to attend one of our meetings, we would be delighted to hear from you.

While non-Masons cannot attend Lodge meetings (as is standard across Freemasonry), we are always happy to speak with anyone interested in joining or learning more. There are also plenty of opportunities to get to know us socially throughout the year.

Annual Ladies' Festival

November saw the highlight of the Janus calendar – our annual weekend away, this time in Norwich. Joined by our partners and families, it was, as always, a thoroughly enjoyable weekend filled with good food, plenty of laughter, dancing, and a few sore heads by Sunday morning.

Welcome to Janus, Matt!

At our March meeting, we were delighted to initiate Matt O'Connor into the Lodge. It was a relaxed and enjoyable evening, shared with visiting Brethren and friends – the perfect way to welcome someone new to Freemasonry and to Janus.

Tight Lines (for some!)

Several Janus members made the most of the early summer sunshine and spent the weekend fishing at Par Fishery in Upminster. No monsters landed but overnight rats safely avoided, and a good time was had by all.

What Our Members Say

Hear from Janus Lodge members about why they joined and what Freemasonry means to them.

"What touched me most when I joined was how warmly I was received into the brotherhood and ever since then, I have found many good friends through masonry. Through the very enjoyable work we do, we have raised thousands of pounds for the charities that we personally feel close to and the charities that masonry as an organisation supports."

Amir Khosravi-Radd
Member since 2007

"Janus is much more than I ever expected when I joined. It is not just another Lodge; it is rooted in the formation of long lasting friendship, support, care and understanding. There is a passion for the charitable work we undertake from everyone in the Lodge, coupled with a great social calendar. Janus is not a Lodge now. It is family."

Paul Scott
Member since 2019

"Joining Janus has honestly been a great decision that I have made. Being part of the Lodge has given me a real sense of belonging. It is about friendship, respect, and trying to be a little better every day whilst helping various charitable organisations — not just for myself, but for others too. I love the mix of tradition, values, and good humour that runs through everything we do."
